Recently Derrick's boss, Travis, approached me about creating a portrait of his wife, Sommer, for her birthday. He was inspired by a painting by John Singer Sarget (master Scottish painter) that he saw in New York because it reminded him of a similar photo he had taken of Sommer sitting on a chair. I was a little nervous about the project because you will remember the inspiration for this piece came from a master while I remain a simple sparrow, and it turns out I was nervous for good reason because this project proved to be quite a grueling process. Since my debut in the painting world four years ago, I have definitely experienced my fair share of trial and error. Lately, however, I have found myself falling into a rhythm as far as how I approach my paintings. For some reason, this project was more of the perseverance, go a certain direction and if you see its not working, be willing to scratch it all and start over again. It is always a vulnerable thing to disclose one's work in progress, but I thought this particular process was so sporadic that its too humorous to not share. That being said, you can find a slideshow of my work from start to finish below.
To ensure this project goes down in my books as the most unique, I must include this part of the story: I actually got to be present when Sommer first saw my recreation of her in painting form (at a very classy dinner party in front of a couple dozen other people). Since Derrick is a friend and co-worker of Travis, we were both invited to birthday party held downtown. After studying her face for hours and hours, I finally met Sommer for the first time in a room where my painting rested on an easel under a drape, to be revealed during dinner, beneath the gaze and scrutiny of all who actually knew her. And that's pretty much how it went down. It was probably one of the most nerve-wrecking things I have ever survived haha. But everyone was so gracious and appreciative, Sommer most of all.
So thank you Travis for that.. And a huge thank you to Sommer for being a beautiful wife, mom, lawyer and a classy painting model ;)
