This past Christmas Lindsey hired me to replicate an old black and white photo of her mother's farmhouse in the midwest, as a gift for her mom. When I first saw the photo, I was both excited and a little overwhelmed. It would be the first time I would work with such an old worn photograph in an attempt to create a painting from it. I became obsessed with the fun in re-creating the worn, aged look especially in the corners of the photograph. I loved how the piece had a crisper precise look in the center and moved to the pretty light and dark shapes of the out-of-focus tree branches. I also really liked the cast shadows the trees were making onto the face and roof of the house. It really helped to make the psychology of the whole piece hold a safe, comforting and nostalgic tone. And, as usual engaged edges are definitely my favorite little trick to help the whole scene come to life.
Thank you Lindsey for thinking of Simple Sparrow for this gift! Your reaction was so priceless :)
