My roommates and I have had the same beat up wooden coffee table (originally bought at World Thrift for $15) for a few years now. When the idea of painting furniture presented itself, this coffee table was definitely the first thing to offer up to the cause :)
The tree at the center of the table was kind of a production to finish. I "carved" the layer around the tree and above the ground in the oval so that the tree and ground would pop out a little more. Figuring out colors was fun as a house to decided, although there were definitely some pretty rough testing periods. At one point, I threw a table cloth over the table because I was frustrated with the mis-colored eclectic collection of ideas.
Even before we moved into our house, we wanted it to be a Shelter, a place where people could come and feel love and hope and be able to rest. The Scripture around the table, from Psalm 9, talks about the Lord being our Shelter.
We also drink a lot of coffee at the Shelter, so I decided on using a espresso, cappuccino, latte color scheme :)
Love you Shelter Ladies!
