Rick & Brooke McDonald lost their baby Gavin about 3 years ago in a horrible accident. Luisel Lawler approached me about commissioning this original piece as an encouragement to the couple. Luisel and I talked about what she was wanting in the piece-- Jesus holding baby Gavin and kissing his forehead. I looked online for different compositions and something about this one moved in me! I just loved the idea of Jesus lifting up Gavin in the air and kissing his sweet cheek. When the project was complete, Nickie Clough, a close friend of the McDonald's saw the painting and told this story:
A little while ago I had a dream that Gavin was in heaven. He looked older than he was when he died (3 months.) He was walking to Jesus, and Jesus picked him up, and tossed him gently above his head and planted a loving kiss on his chubby cheek. I didn't know when the right time was to share that, but now that I see this painting, I know that this painting is what I saw in my dream! -Nicki Clough
I am truly grateful to have been a part of this story! Thank you Luisel for commissioning me to do this piece and thank you Rick & Brooke for letting me share in your experience in this small way.
